Just finished putting up the title header for my friend and colleague’s blog. Ms Clarkin has just set up a book club blog for her S2 pupils. There are only a few posts on it so far, though it’s worth checking out for the future, it’s going to be an interesting site. The link is below, I’ve also added it to the blog roll.
This week’s chosen artwork is a sneak peek at the piece that Sammy M is entering into the Aesthetica Creative Competition. Sammy spent around two months of lunch times planning, painting and pencilling the work above. Those in the know will remember her from a few posts ago, she won a ‘Design a Superhero’ competition. I’m sure you’ll agree that it is a beautiful and emotive piece of work. I’m wishing her luck on behalf of all that visit the blog.
Laura O (OLSP, S1) shows us more new pages from her sketchbook above while below Sophie A (OLSP, S2) proves that you don’t need fancy materials or pages to practice your art.
The Art Classroom is now available as a page on facebook. Many pupils had suggested that they would like to access it socially through facebook. I’ll give it a trial for a month or so, my own personal profile is still unavailable for friending on facebook and will not accept any requests (it’s my one place that I can have a little privacy), though I will try to communicate via the fan page.
Well, it’s BBC School Report Day, the Art Clast podcast team created a report for the event, though they were let down by poor correspondence from the BBC and the linking and broadcast of the report was not completed. It’s such a pity, as the report is one of the few that would have focused on how young people perceive art and culture around them. You can watch the report on Youtube below.
Some of my S2 pupils have been designing a Superhero for a competition run by the library service of West Dunbartonshire. The competition winner will win an original piece of artwork by artist Gary Erskine, as well as have their idea enlarged and framed professionally. I wish everyone who took part the best of luck. Some examples of which are below, I’ll discuss each one in detail, show you more and credit the artists later on this week.
Nicholas Gurewitch is the creator of the Perry Bible Fellowship comic strips. The strips themselves are varied in style and nature, often black humoured and sometimes mature in content, they’re not always for everyone, but the ones I have featured here give an idea of how funny he can be without using shock tactics.
I first came across Nicholas’ work by accident, then shortly afterward, interviewed him for a blog I was writing for at the time. He has gone on to show the strip in multiple publications, including the Guardian newspaper and has even piloted some related animations for the BBC.
‘Rhino and Boy’ (above) is my favourite strip, I was able to get a signed limited edition copy from him that I still have to get round to framing. Nicholas decorated the tube with some of his ‘stickmen’ illustrations. It’s almost as amazing as the artwork it is protecting.
There are tonnes more strips over on the PBF site as well as two books that can be bought through Nicholas or Amazon. There are very few people that have moved on the comic strip from it’s generic three panel tradition, fortunately though, there are artists like Nicholas out there still pushing the boundaries of the art form.
This art class blog shows the day to day workings of an art classroom. All pupil work shown is copyright of the pupil. Unit plans and ideas are owned by David Dunlop, but can be used or changed for your own classes.
Pupils are advised to comment using Surname initial only (ie: 'Jane D'). If you require the removal of work or comments, please email the contact below. This blog is not exclusive to David Dunlop's classes and other work/resource submissions are very welcome.

The application below is not available on iPhone. It contains flash and will be displayed as a mysterious blue lego block or maybe even a blank space. I wouldn't worry though, you're not missing too much.
