Mind Mapping For Critical Studies

Part A of the expressive critical exam (Art Studies) shows a photo of an artists work and usually asks the pupil to explain the ‘tone, composition and colour’ of the painting. To study for this section I surprise my S3 students with expressive still-life works (5 of them) placed on each table in the classroom. The pupils get into groups of 3-4 and mind map/doodle/list everything they can under the three headings; ‘tone’, ‘composition’ and ‘colour’. They have 10 minutes per table to list whatever they can.
